Diet Reviews: The Diet Solution Program

The Diet Solution Program is an e-book created by Isabel De Los Rios. She is a lifestyle and nutrition coach based in New Jersey and gives dieters a plan to change eating habits for life and develop long term eating strategies rather than a quick fix weight loss program.  Overall, I would give the Diet Solution Program thumbs up based on the fact that it's built around healthy eating and long-term success rather than quick fix, marketing hype.  Their sales page is also very informative instead of just hyping their product.  The information video you can watch is fantastic.

The Program

The Diet Solution is based on metabolism type because the author views metabolism as the key to weight control.  The program places participants into one of three different categories (protein, carb or mixed type) based on your metabolic type. This is determined through a questionnaire process on your eating habits and lifestyle.  The metabolism type approach claims to use common visible symptoms relating to the features of a person plus other superficial parts of the body to assess what type of metabolism you have. Unfortunately, the validity and effectiveness of metabolic typing has not been supported with any substantial research.

This is actually the one part of the program that kind of bothers me.  I don't think it's necessary, and I really don't know where they even get this theory.  I don't mean to make it a big deal, though, because the principles of the rest of the program are sound and well put together.  I wish she didn't use this as the basis of the program, because it kind of detracts from the rest of it, which is fantastic. I can't really say that metabolism type approach doesn't work, because this program has helped a lot of people.  I'd just take that part with a grain of salt, and continue on your way with the program.

Once they help you determine your metabolism type based on their typing process, you are then given an eating plan that fits you best. Each type has their own distinct dietary guidelines which I could also do without, but they're not so different that it's a deal breaker.  I really think De Los Rios was just trying to differentiate herself by coming up with a new twist, which is cool with me.  If you visit her site, you can watch a great free video that helps explain the program.  Keep in mind that this video is basically an informational, but it's also very well thought out material.

How the Diet Works

The first thing covered in The Diet Solution is mindset. She advises you to set up your mind for success, suggesting that you write down your goals when it comes to weight loss and healthy living. Writing down specific goals and visualizing success can be a very useful tool to creating weight loss success, and I use it in my program as well so I definitely agree with this concept. Many people do not do this step and often fail, so it is worth taking the time to follow the program. When we write things down we also show ourselves that this is important to us and therefore set the stage for success.  There is research showing that putting your goals down on paper makes you far more likely to succeed in any endeavor, so I really like that this process is included.  I think she could have gotten way more into the psychological/emotional side of weight loss, but that's not a big part of this program.

Once you have done the goal setting, you are then given 3 steps that need to be followed in order to lose weight:

  • Eat in accordance to you metabolism type
  • Stay within specific calorie ranges
  • Consume a variety of high quality foods

Great stuff.  Those are tried and true principles, and this program lays out how to do them with a great plan.  To work out your metabolic type, Isabel gives you a variety of questions to answer to determine whether you are a protein type, carb type of mixed. Detailed meal plans are provided for each metabolic type to make weight loss simple and easy.

Isabel also gives tips on snack foods if you find you get hungry between meals. She suggests obvious healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables and nuts and even says that one glass of alcohol per week is OK on this program. Not that alcohol is great for you, but I like the fact that the program is a little realistic.  Like any program, the closer you follow this one, the better your results will be.  Yet, she attempts to factor reality into the entire program, which is excellent.  She also recommends using Stevia as a sweetener over refined sugar and other sweeteners.  For health reasons, I don't really like anything artificial, but for weight loss, these can be very effective.

Exercise

The Diet Solution recommends that exercise, including both strength and cardiovascular are ideal. I couldn't agree more, as both are essential for a healthy lifestyle and to give you the best possible body shape.  They don't really go into much detail on this, but at least it is addresses and suggested by the author.

Cost

The Diet Solution only costs $39.97 as a download, and you get a ton of stuff with it. I actually think this is a great deal for everything she includes.  This is fairly reasonable compared to other ebooks available on the internet and offers much more information than others do. There is also a deluxe version that costs $59.97 which comes with audio downloads.  If you're more of a listener than a reader, this is a good option.  Still a pretty good deal for the amount of information you get.

Pros

  • Emphasizes eating high quality foods
  • Encourages you to eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables.
  • Includes specific and detailed meal plans that are easy to use
  • Teaches you how to select healthy foods in correct portion sizes
  • Increases awareness of how different foods affect the body
  • Teaches you detailed information about nutrition and the importance of water
  • Comes with a quick-start guide and easy step-by-step implementation to take the guess work out
  • No crazy add-on products or supplements to purchase later

Cons

  • The metabolism type theory is not supported by any valid research
  • She touches on psychological issues/mindset, but doesn't go anywhere with it
  • Exercise is not emphasized enough

Recommendation

Overall I would consider this a healthy weight loss program that I can definitely recommend.  Thumbs up on this one.

The Diet Solution is a good overall weight loss program because it helps you achieve long term success as opposed to short term weight loss and frustration down the road. Despite the whole metabolism type thing, it gives you great information about diet and nutrition plus specific meal plans making it easy for anyone who doesn’t have the time to make their own.  If this sounds good to you, this is a sound program that will be very helpful.
